Restorative: the Executing strength for founders
It's broken. I can't leave it like that.
What it is
They see what's wrong and feel a pull to repair it. Problems are not insults. Problems are the job.
What it is not
Not Maximizer (make the good great). Not Analytical (find the cause for its own sake). Restorative is the fix.
How it shows up in a founder
- Finds the listing with the 2-star pattern, the SKU with the return reason, the process that leaks.
- Calm in a crisis others call a disaster. This is their weather.
- Would rather repair the core product than launch a new one.
- The postmortem is their favorite meeting if it produces a patch.
- Bored when everything is 'fine.' Fine looks like neglect.
How this strength breaks the company
- Only plays defense. The company is a hospital. Nothing new is born.
- Needs a problem. Will poke a working system to have something to fix.
- Can't celebrate. The win is just the absence of a bug.
- Attracts dumpster fires. Becomes the person who lives in them.
- When scared, finds another broken thing. Avoids the blank page.
Superpowers in the company
Product
Turns a bleeding SKU into a survivor. QA, returns, claims, the thing customers actually hate.
People
Saves a struggling hire if the problem is skill. Can over-diagnose people as broken.
Money
Stops the leak. Returns, waste, chargebacks, failed launches resurrected.
Ops
Root cause and patch. The warehouse, the SOP, the 3PL failure — they want in.
You, them, co-founder
If you have it
Fix what is on fire. Then put 40% of the week on building, not repairing. A company that is only a hospital dies of no future.
If they report to you
Give them the broken thing and the authority to change it. Don't give them only greenfield. Celebrate the fix in public.
If they're a co-founder
They will keep the wheels on. You must still make them walk past a dent that is not this week's dent.
Working rule
Every week needs one fix and one build. Repair is not the whole job.
Ask this
What did you fix last month that stayed fixed — and what did you leave broken on purpose?
Hire beside them
Maximizer, Futuristic, Activator, Ideation
Builders, not more doctors. Someone who will start the thing that isn't broken yet.
Tells
Hears the bug in the demo. Goes toward the smoke. Asks 'what's failing?' before 'what's next?'
Stress tell
More problems. They look for a fire so they know what to do.
Don't confuse with
Analytical wants the cause. Maximizer wants excellent. Restorative wants it working. Pair with Futuristic so the hospital still has a future.
