Self-Assurance: the Influencing strength for founders
I can carry this.
What it is
An inner vote that doesn't need a committee. They trust their judgment and they will bet themselves.
What it is not
Not Command (control the room). Not Belief (the values). Not Activator (the start). Self-Assurance is certainty in the self.
How it shows up in a founder
- Makes the call when data is incomplete and sleeps.
- Doesn't need the room's permission to own a bet. Will put their name on it.
- Unmoved by a trendy panic. 'That's not how I see it.'
- Hires slowly into their inner trust. Then they back that person hard.
- Investors either love the spine or call it arrogance. Both are the same trait in a suit.
How this strength breaks the company
- Won't take counsel. The inner vote becomes a closed court.
- Bets the company on a gut that is just a mood.
- Team stops arguing because it never lands. Then they stop caring.
- Can't partner. Equals feel like friction.
- When scared, more certainty. Doubt is not allowed in the building.
Superpowers in the company
Product
A founder who will ship the weird bet the committee would sand down.
People
Clarity. Also: people feel like extras in someone else's movie.
Money
Will go long on a thesis. Needs a Deliberative in the tent, not as a veto — as a mirror.
Ops
Decides. The factory moves. The factory may be marching off a cliff with excellent posture.
You, them, co-founder
If you have it
Certainty after a structured dissent. You don't need agreement. You do need to have heard it.
If they report to you
Give them a real bet and the rope. Don't committee them to death. Require a pre-mortem in writing.
If they're a co-founder
They will not flinch. You must be allowed to be the doubt without being treated like a traitor.
Working rule
Trust your gut. Write the dissent you ignored. If you can't name it, you're not confident. You're deaf.
Ask this
When did you last change a bet because someone you respect pushed — not because the market slapped you?
Hire beside them
Deliberative, Strategic, Empathy, Analytical
Mirrors, not fans. People who can argue and still row.
Tells
Calm when others wobble. Doesn't ask the room how they should feel. Speaks in 'I will.'
Stress tell
Louder certainty. Less asking. The inner court gets smaller.
Don't confuse with
Command takes the wheel of the room. Self-Assurance takes the wheel of the self. Pair with Deliberative so the spine has brakes.
