Ideation: the Strategic Thinking strength for founders
There's a better way hiding in plain sight.
What it is
Sparks and remixes. They see connections other people walk past. The current way looks obviously dumb once a better pattern appears.
What it is not
Not Learner (the climb). Not Strategic (choosing the path). Not Futuristic (painting tomorrow). Ideation is the spark. They can be bored of their own idea by Thursday.
How it shows up in a founder
- Whiteboard full. Shipping calendar thin. Three good pitches in one investor meeting — all different.
- 'What if we didn't sell on Amazon at all?' lands in the middle of a locked Q4 plan.
- Hates 'that's how the industry does it.' Treats a competitor's SOP as a dare.
- Connects a customer complaint to an old article to a SKU nobody is watching.
- Gets visibly bored in execution detail. Comes alive the second the problem can be reinvented.
How this strength breaks the company
- Idea inflation. Team stops taking the latest spark seriously. 'That's just another one of theirs.'
- Abandons 80% done work for a prettier concept. Graveyard of almost-shipped SKUs.
- Confuses novelty with strategy. New is not the same as right. New is not a plan.
- Makes operators feel stupid for liking the current system. The people who keep the lights on quit first.
- When scared, invents instead of decides. The room fills with options. Nobody leaves with an owner.
Superpowers in the company
Product
New offers, bundles, names, angles, loopholes, category hacks. The unfair 'wait—' in the room.
People
Unlocks a stuck meeting. Gives the team a third option when everyone is fighting over two bad ones.
Money
Finds non-obvious levers: a channel, an offer, a partnership, a price architecture nobody priced.
Ops
Can redesign a broken process in twenty minutes. Will redesign it again in twenty more if you let them.
You, them, co-founder
If you have it
Capture, don't chase. A running list. No new project until one ships. Filter: does this move cash, time, or risk in 90 days? Tell the room which ideas are play and which are 'we're doing this.' They cannot tell unless you say it.
If they report to you
Never kill the spark in public. Park it: 'log it, we pick on Friday.' Score them on ideas that shipped, not ideas that impressed. Give them a sandbox SKU so they don't sandbox the core P&L.
If they're a co-founder
Put them in the room before you copy the competitor. They will not naturally close the set — you must say 'this one.' Do not make them COO. Spark, then hand off.
Working rule
No new idea gets a project until one idea has a ship date.
Ask this
What's an idea you killed on purpose — and which one actually made it to a customer?
Hire beside them
Activator, Arranger, Focus, Discipline
A closer. Not another brainstormer. Someone who turns one idea into a calendar.
Tells
'What if—' more than 'we should.' Draws while others talk. Eyes leave the slide the moment it becomes a checklist.
Stress tell
More ideas, faster. Options multiply. Decision shrinks. The whiteboard becomes a hiding place.
Don't confuse with
Strategic picks the path. Futuristic paints tomorrow. Learner climbs. Ideation sparks. Pair with Activator so a spark becomes a date on the calendar.
