Focus: the Executing strength for founders

Pick one. The rest is noise.

What it is

A filter. They set a direction and starve everything that isn't it. Priority is a verb.

What it is not

Not Discipline (routine). Not Achiever (finishing many things). Not Strategic (choosing among paths). Focus is staying on the one that was chosen.

How it shows up in a founder

How this strength breaks the company

Superpowers in the company

Product

A catalog that isn't 400 mid SKUs. The hero gets the budget.

People

Clarity. Also: people on 'non-priority' work feel discarded.

Money

Spend follows the bet. Stops the leak of a thousand small yeses.

Ops

A queue with a front. Weak at interrupt-driven work unless that's the chosen target.

You, them, co-founder

If you have it

Revisit the target on a cadence, not in every hallway. Focus is not stubbornness. Write the kill criteria.

If they report to you

Give them one outcome and the authority to say no. Don't drop a surprise stack of 'quick asks.'

If they're a co-founder

They will keep you from opening five fronts. You must tell them when the war changed.

Working rule

One company priority per quarter, written. Everything else is a hobby or a no.

Ask this

What did you say no to last month that was good — and still right to refuse?

Hire beside them

Adaptability, Arranger, Input, Woo

Someone who can catch what the tunnel missed.

Tells

Asks for the point. Crosses items off, doesn't add them. Body turns away from tangents.

Stress tell

Narrower. Shorter answers. The peripheral vision shuts off.

Don't confuse with

Discipline wants routine. Achiever wants done. Strategic picks the path. Focus stays on it. Pair with Adaptability so the target can be retargeted.
