Responsibility: the Executing strength for founders
If I said it, it's mine.
What it is
Ownership as identity. A promise is a contract with themselves. They cannot put it down and feel clean.
What it is not
Not Achiever (the finish). Not Belief (the why). Not Discipline (the system). Responsibility is the psychological inability to drop a commitment.
How it shows up in a founder
- The person who picks up the thing that hit the floor. Then it's theirs forever.
- Will work the night because they told a customer Wednesday.
- Hates people who flake. Their standard is not optional.
- Takes blame in the room even when it was shared.
- Inbox zero is a moral issue. Open loops feel like dirt.
How this strength breaks the company
- Cannot say no. Becomes the dumpster of the company. Then they break.
- Won't delegate because 'it's my name on it.' Bottleneck with a halo.
- Resents the team for not caring like they do. Quiet scorekeeping.
- Guilt as a management style. People feel like they're letting a parent down.
- When scared, takes more. The hero complex gets louder.
Superpowers in the company
Product
Commitments to retailers, customers, and dates that actually happen.
People
Trust. Also: they accidentally train the team to hand them the bag.
Money
Pays vendors on time. Keeps the promise that keeps the terms.
Ops
The last line of defense. Dangerous as the only line.
You, them, co-founder
If you have it
A written no. If it isn't on the list, it isn't yours. Delegation is not a character flaw. It's how a company lives past you.
If they report to you
Protect them from the dump. Help them say no in the meeting, not after. Don't praise only the heroics.
If they're a co-founder
They will not let a ball drop. You must stop them from picking up every ball. Ownership needs a fence.
Working rule
If you take it, you name the drop-dead and the deputy. No silent forever-ownership.
Ask this
What did you refuse last month because it wasn't yours — and what are you still carrying that isn't?
Hire beside them
Arranger, Deliberative, Activator, Command
People who will take a bag on purpose so Responsibility can drop one.
Tells
Says 'I got it' too fast. Body tense around open loops. Follows up without being asked.
Stress tell
Takes more. Sleeps less. The word 'fine' gets shorter.
Don't confuse with
Achiever wants the finish. Belief wants the why. Responsibility wants the promise kept. Pair with Arranger so ownership can be shared.
