Competition: the Influencing strength for founders

Second place is a data point. First is the point.

What it is

They need a rival. Performance is relative. The scoreboard is how they know they're alive.

What it is not

Not Achiever (done). Not Significance (being important). Not Maximizer (excellence). Competition is winning against someone.

How it shows up in a founder

How this strength breaks the company

Superpowers in the company

Product

Hunts the gap in a competitor's listing, price, or bundle and closes it fast.

People

Raises the standard in a sales or ads team. Toxic if the whole company is a leaderboard.

Money

Will spend to win share. Needs a margin adult in the room.

Ops

Loves a KPI wall. Weak at quiet, unranked maintenance work.

You, them, co-founder

If you have it

Pick the right games. One scoreboard per quarter, not twelve. If there's no opponent worth beating, build the capability anyway.

If they report to you

Give them a clear rival and a clean metric. Don't put them on a team that needs to share credit quietly. Debrief losses without humiliation.

If they're a co-founder

They will not let you get comfortable. You must stop them from turning every vendor and teammate into a contest.

Working rule

We only compete where winning pays. Vanity share is not a strategy.

Ask this

Who are we beating, and what does winning deposit in the bank?

Hire beside them

Strategic, Analytical, Harmony, Relator

Someone who cares about the game and the team, not just the ranking.

Tells

Asks who else is in the space. Body language changes when a name to beat appears.

Stress tell

Goes after someone. Discount, attack, all-nighter. The rival becomes the strategy.

Don't confuse with

Achiever wants done. Maximizer wants excellent. Competition wants to win. Pair with Strategic so the fight is the right fight.
