Executive coach, founder room, or Vistage/YPO?

By Steve Simonson

Should I hire an executive coach or join a peer group like Chairman's Circle, Vistage, or YPO?

It depends on what's actually stuck. If the problem is you (how you lead, decide, or communicate), hire a 1:1 executive coach. If the problem is the business and you're tired of making big calls alone, join a small founder room: Chairman's Circle is about 20–30 operators I curate, with bi-weekly hot seats on real decisions. If you want Vistage or YPO, start from the eligibility on their own pages, cited below. Plenty of founders do two of these. Pick the one that fits the company you run today.

What you leave withA written roadmap and time on my calendar, if you hire me.A call to make, and people who will ask you about it next time. The group works an issue, and the Chair meets you one-to-one, as Vistage's membership page describes it (as of Oct 2026).A peer community if you qualify. YPO's become-a-member page describes confidential, forum-type conversations (as of Oct 2026). I am not promising a Catalyst88 result.

When a 1:1 executive coach is the right call

Hire a 1:1 executive coach when the stuck part is you. How you lead. How you decide. How you talk to the people who run the company with you. A peer room can still help. It will not sit with you and write the roadmap.

My version of that work is on the executive coaching page. Hourly is $1,800 (as of Oct 2026). A 10-hour retainer is $15,000 (as of Oct 2026). A 25-hour retainer is $25,000 (as of Oct 2026). Booked meetings. A written roadmap. An NDA if you want one. If you want me on a text thread between calls, that is Chairman's Circle PRO, not this.

I wrote the longer split between an executive coach and a business coach here: executive coach vs business coach for founders.

When a founder room is the right call

Join a founder room when the problem is the business and you are tired of making the big calls alone. Chairman's Circle is that room. I curate about 20–30 operators. We meet bi-weekly. You bring a real decision. You leave with a call to make. We deploy the work in the company, not in a slide.

It is not a course. It is not a seminar. Start at Chairman's Circle if that is the door. The other founder rooms I get asked about — Million Dollar Sellers, Titan, and eComFuel — are on the compare page.

When Vistage or YPO is the right call

Look at Vistage or YPO when you want their network and you are willing to meet their published rules. I am not in those rooms. I am not ranking them against mine. If one of them is already your home, stay.

Vistage's membership page says the group is local, meets one day a month, and holds 12 to 16 CEOs or owners from companies that do not compete, with a Chair in the room. It lists company revenue above $5 million (as of Oct 2026). It dates the model to 1957 and counts 45,000 members (as of Oct 2026). It does not list a price. Ask Vistage.

Vistage's about page adds 40 countries to that member count (as of Oct 2026).

YPO's requirements page says a candidate is under 45 and the top operator of the company or division (as of Oct 2026). Employee rule: 50 full-time employees, or 15 or more and at least $2,750,000 in annual employee compensation (as of Oct 2026). Revenue floors on that page: $16,000,000 for sales, service, or manufacturing (as of Oct 2026); $13,000,000 for an agency (as of Oct 2026); $330,000,000 in assets under management for a financial institution (as of Oct 2026); or $27,000,000 enterprise value (as of Oct 2026).

YPO's become-a-member page lists a one-time initiation fee of $4,790 (as of Oct 2026) and annual dues of $4,790 (as of Oct 2026). It says that estimate does not include local chapter dues. The same page mentions chapters and forum-type conversations (as of Oct 2026). It does not publish a chapter size or a meeting calendar. I am leaving those out.

Can I do more than one?

Yes. Plenty of founders keep a 1:1 coach and a peer room. Some add Vistage or YPO when the published gate fits the company they run. Pick the one that fixes what is stuck this quarter. Add a second only when the first one is already doing its job. If you already have a home that works, stay.

FAQ

Is Chairman's Circle part of YPO?

No. Catalyst88 is independent. Chairman's Circle is not a YPO chapter and not a Vistage group. I do not claim a seat, a rank, or a discount against either one.

Is a peer group cheaper than an executive coach?

Chairman's Circle is $497/month (as of Oct 2026). PRO is $1,997/month (as of Oct 2026). My executive coaching is $1,800 an hour (as of Oct 2026). A month in the Circle costs less than one of those hours. That does not make them the same product. Vistage does not publish a price on its membership page (as of Oct 2026). YPO lists a $4,790 initiation fee (as of Oct 2026) and $4,790 in annual dues (as of Oct 2026) on its become-a-member page, and says local chapter dues are extra.

Do I need a revenue minimum for Chairman's Circle?

No revenue minimum is published on the Chairman's Circle page. The gate is the invitation. I curate about 20–30 operators.

Should I leave Vistage or YPO for Chairman's Circle?

Not because of this page. If that room is working, stay. Come here when you want a smaller room, bi-weekly hot seats, and me in the chair.
